Eligibility Guidelines

Minimum Requirements for the Lawrence Family Medicine Residency Program

  • We accept Foreign Medical Graduates/International Medical Graduates with an ECFMG certificate ECFMG
  • You must have 6 months of recent, significant, hands-on, clinical experience in an academic setting in the United States.
  • Any informal observerships, externships, or experiences with a doctor not affiliated with a medical school or residency training program DO NOT QUALIFY!
  • Applications are only accepted through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) and applicant must participate in the NRMP (National Residency Matching Program).
  • Must have passed Step 1 and Step 2 of the USMLE.
  • Application deadline is December 1st.
  • Visas -We will consider on an individual basis, once it is determined that you are an eligible and competitive applicant.
How To Apply

Family Medicine residencies are participating in ERAS for processing applications. If you decide that you are interested in applying to our program, there are some important instructions that need special attention:

  1. We ask that you apply to our program through the computerized application process only. Any paper applications will be returned to you, with a request that you apply through ERAS.
  2. The NBME requires that you request which residencies are to receive notification of your USMLE scores.  We require steps I & II.
  3. As an addendum to your Personal Statement on  ERAS, please include the following, clearly labeled, in order for your application to our program to be complete:
    1. Other languages spoken.
    2. How did you hear about our residency?
    3. Your answers to the following:  Discuss any previous experiences you have had working with the underserved and how they have influenced your career goals.  List the two to three factors which were most important in your decision to practice family medicine.  List two to three factors which influence your choice of a residency.  List any outside interests, activities, community service involvement.

Our admissions process is highly selective. We will review applications and schedule an interview if we feel your educational goals can be met here. Interviews are generally scheduled from November through January. We have never accepted residents outside the NRMP. To receive our fullest attention, return completed applications by December 1st.  Final ranking is completed in early February.

Applicants for Second Year Positions:
Please email us to determine whether we have any current or expected openings.  If we do, you will be instructed to apply through the ERAS process.

Shared Residency Positions:
We are open to shared residency positions and will consider them on a case-by-case basis.

Medical Student Rotations:
If you are interested in spending time with us during a student rotation, please email us for more information.  Medical student slots are popular so it is advisable to contact us as soon as possible.  It is not necessary to complete a medical student clerkship here in order to be considered for our residency.
