Meet The Residents

Class of 2000

Sarah Carlson-Buckley, M.D. Sarah Carlson-Buckley, M.D.
University of Minnesota Medical School

Sarah graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School.  She completed undergraduate studies in Spanish and biology at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota.  Cross-cultural medicine is one of her special interests.  She is fluent in Spanish, which she used during clinical rotations while caring for pregnant women and their infants, all recent immigrants from Mexico, Peru, Ecuador and Guatemala. She enjoys reading, singing, hiking, and biking. Sarah now works at Allina Medical Clinic in Eagan, Minnesota.

Elizabeth McGovern, M.D. Elizabeth McGovern, M.D.
University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine

Liz graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine after completing a bachelor's degree from Haverford College in Haverford, PA.  She has volunteered for:  Pittsburg Cares, Homeless Outreach Education Project, Operation Save A Life, Washington Free Clinic and the Latin American Youth Center.  In college, Elizabeth played varsity lacrosse and basketball and was M.V.P. in varsity soccer two years in a row.  She speaks intermediate Spanish and enjoys running, backpacking, skiing, snow boarding and soccer. Elizabeth is now faculty in our residency program.

Joan A. Harden, M.D. Joan A. Harden, M.D.
University of Illinois

Joan graduated from the University of Illinois in Chicago.  Originally from Pennsylvania, she earned her undergraduate degree in psychology at Northwestern University.  Because of her experience working at three inner-city family health centers, Joan decided to pursue a medicine career in family medicine.  Her affiliation include the Student National Medical Association, the American Medical Student Association and the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians. Joan now practices at a community health center in Decatur, Georgia.

Geoffrey Pechinsky, M.D. Geoffrey Pechinsky, M.D.
Boston University School of Medicine

Geoff graduated from the Boston University School of Medicine after completing undergraduate studies in English from the University of Notre Dame.  He's been a member of the Center for Community Health Education, Research, and Service for the past three years.  He has worked as an elementary school antiviolence counselor, in an AIDS counseling project and with other underserved populations.  Geoff was named to the All American varsity fencing team in 1993.  He enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, hiking, camping, skiing, mountain biking, running and traveling. Since residency Geoff worked as a staff family physician in the US Navy. During this time he has been stationed in Bethesda, Maryland, Puerto Rico, and Spain.

Rona Knudsen, M.D. Rona Knudsen, M.D.
State University of New York Health Science Center, Brooklyn College

Rona graduated from the University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn College of Medicine after completing a bachelor's degree in biology from Colorado College in Colorado Springs.  She is a National Heath Service Corps Scholar and has co-initiated, developed, and implemented a project in which medical, nursing and physician assistant students visit a Drop-In Center, part of a homeless outreach project in Brooklyn, NY.  Rona also has experience working at a multiservice center for homeless youth, at a group home for people with addictions and mental illness, in soup kitchens and with community garden projects.  She has a working knowledge of Spanish and spent two months in Guatemala.  In her spare time, she enjoys leading hikes for the Sierra Club. Rona now practices in a community health center in Pueblo, Colorado.

Julie J. Phelps, M.D. Julie J. Phelps, M.D.
Dartmouth College Medical School

Julie graduated from Dartmouth College Medical School after completing a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Haverford College in Pennsylvania.  Her interest in working with the underserved came from her experience as a counselor and nursing assistant during four summers at Pine Tree Camp for Disabled Children and Adults in Oakland, Maine.   She completed a primary care clerkship in Tuba City, AZ where she worked with the Navajo and Hopi peoples.  She speaks some French, and in her spare time knits and swims.  Julie also enjoys singing, arranging, directing music and playing piano. Julie now practices at Waterville Family Practice in Waterville, Maine.

Suniti Kumar, M.D. Suniti Kumar, M.D.
University of Massachusetts

Suniti graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Worcester, MA after earning an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA. She also pursued graduate studies in biomedical engineering at Johns Hopkins University.  Throughout graduate school, she volunteered at People's Community Health Center in Baltimore and took a semester off to work full-time at the clinic while exploring her interest in medicine.  After her first year of medical school, she spent two months in Guatemala working in a rural hospital.  She speaks Spanish and enjoys backpacking, playing the flute, meditating and studying world religions. Suniti now practices at Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center in Portland, Oregon.

Carla M. Vaccaro, M.D. Carla M. Vaccaro, M.D.
University of Massachusetts

Carla graduated from the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, Worcester, MA and completed a rotation at GLFHC in the fall of 1996.  A native of Beverly, MA she earned her undergraduate degree in chemistry at Princeton University.  She speaks Spanish and Japanese.  She gained experience translating while she was a research assistant at Tokyo Medical College in Japan, where she worked at the Collaborating Center for Health Promotion and Sports Medicine.  She has been a volunteer for the Big Sister Program and spent six weeks in a rural hospital in Alamos, Sonora, Mexico.   Her interests include hiking, travel, languages (Spanish, Japanese and German) and running. Carla now practices at Merrimack Family Medicine in Tewksbury, MA
