Meet The Residents

Class of 2002

Carolyn Augart

Born in Arlington, MA, Carolyn earned a B.S. in biology/neuroscience at U Mass Amherst. There she conducted three years of research on the neurodevelopment of fruit flies. After college she worked as a social worker in a "first time parents" program in Milwaukee, WI. While at U Mass Medical, she volunteered in a Worcester soup kitchen and conducted research on child abuse. She speaks basic Italian and is learning Spanish. Upon completing residency, Carolyn stayed on as a Faculty Development Fellow for a year before joining our faculty. Carolyn is now the IM Rotation Coordinator, as well as the Co-Rotation Coordinator for the ICU Rotation.

Wendy Brooks Barr

 Wendy was born in Pittsburgh, PA. She is currently living in Boston, MA. She received her MD and MPH from Tufts University School of Medicine. She has a B.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Northwestern University. She has work experience as a research and rehabilitation aide, and as a public health intern. She has volunteered her time as a member of the board of directors for better neighborhoods and affordable housing in the South End. She enjoys reading biographies, history and historical fiction, playing the flute and bassoon, exploring new places and taking long walks with her husband. Since residency Wendy has received a MS in Clinical Epidemiology from Boston University. She is now a faculty member at the Beth Israel Residency Program in Urban Family Practice, as well as serves as the Research Co-Director for that residency program.

Maria Kaefer

Maria transferred to our program after completing a year at Health Partners Family Medicine Program in St. Paul, MN. Before that, she received her MD from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and her BA in History from Georgetown University in Washington, DC.. Prior to medical school, she worked as a medical assistant with Health Care for the Homeless and a clinic serving Salvadoran Refugees. She has a special interest in lay health worker training and has avidly traveled in Latin America. Born in Illinois, Maria enjoys writing poetry, playing guitar, bluegrass and old-time mandolin music, organic gardening, and visiting friends. She speaks and writes Spanish fluently. Maria is now in practice at East Lake Clinic, a community health center within a Latino community in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is also a member of Hennepin Faculty Associates.

 

Nurit Licht (Pendleton)

Born in Israel, Nurit graduated from Dartmouth Medical School after earning a B.A. in political science from Columbia University. She has volunteered her time as a student coordinator, an educator, and a pregnancy and birth control counselor. She has worked both in Alaska and in California at Indian Health Service sites and completed a Health Promotion Disease prevention project in Bethel, AK for the NHSC (National Health Service Corps). She speaks Hebrew and Spanish. Nurit is now the Medical Director of a federally qualified community health center, Petaluma Health Center in San Francisco, California.

Linnea Meyer

 Born in Illinois, Linnea graduated from the University of Massachusetts Medical School after finishing her undergraduate work in psychology at Earlham College. She has worked with mentally retarded adults, as an Assistant to acupuncturist and as a managing and production editor in the desktop publishing industry. Linnea studied Spanish in Columbia, South America, and worked in the Middle east where she volunteered as a camp counselor for Palestinian girls. She has studied Chinese martial arts for more than 10 years and continues to pursue interest in Chinese medicine and language. Linnea now practices in a private practice in Arlington, Massachusetts.

Ava Moskin

Ava earned her MD from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/ Yeshiva University in New York. She also has a B.A. in Human Ecology from College of the Atlantic. Ava has worked as a family planning counselor, as a teaching assistant and as a crew boss on an organic farm. She has volunteered her time as a sexual assault counselor and needle exchange/HIV harm reduction worker. Ava is a native of New York City. She enjoys reading, pottery, running, ultimate frisbee and visiting museums. She knows how to speak Serbo-Croatian. Ava now works for Mabel Wadsworth Women's Health Center in Bangor, Maine.

Norma Perez-Abele

Norma came to California with her family from Latin America. She received a B.S. in biology from Mount St. Mary’s in California and completed medical school at the University of California, Irvine. After graduation, she worked in research in Boston for eight years, co-authoring several articles in her field. She has volunteered as a home crisis family counselor for Interface and in a shelter for battered women. While in medical school, she spent a month in one of the poorest communities in Guadalajara, Mexico and plans to continue her work in the Latino community after her family medicine residency. Norma now practices at Lovelace Medical Group - Coors Clinic, a community health center in New Mexico.

Eowyn Reike

Eowyn has transferred to Lawrence from Swedish Medical Center Residency, Seattle, WA. She earned her MD from Brown University School of Medicine in Providence, RI in May of 1999. She has also earned an MPH from Harvard as well as a BA in English and American Literature from Brown University. Eowyn has a long history of interest in Primary Care. She was the founder of Brown’s PC Interest Group, while in medical school, a member of the RI Department of Health PC Task Force, the coordinator of the National PC Day, and was a member of the coordinating committee of Generalist Physicians in Training. She has researched curricular innovations in "service-learning" in health professions education when writing a curriculum guide presenting profiles of service learning courses. She speaks conversational Spanish and enjoys ultimate frisbee, gardening, folk music, singing, hiking, meditation, cross-country skiing, cats, classical and contemporary fiction. Eowyn practices at Southeast Medical Center, a community health center, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Erica Verkleeren

Erica was born in South Bend, IN. She earned her MD from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. She also has a B.A. in Biology from Kenyon College and has volunteered with the Peace Corps as a health educator in Benin, West Africa. She has work experience as a summer intern nurse’s aide, a laboratory assistant, and an assistant innkeeper managing an 18-room bed and breakfast. She has volunteered her time as an advocate of the Coalition for Battered Women and as a member of the Domestic Violence Action Committee. Erica has some knowledge of French and Spanish. She enjoys hiking, running, cycling, dancing, soccer, music, travel and reading. After her residency, Erica stayed on with our health center for several years. In 2007 her family moved to New York, where Erica now works at Addison Health Clinic as the only physician in a poor rural town.
